Don't Take it From Us - Hear From Our YES! Grant Beneficiaries:

Melanie Wamalwa

Co-Founder, Sustainergy Solutions

“My biggest success has been breaking barriers and becoming a voice for change in spaces where young women like me are often underrepresented.

Coming from a community where access to education, let alone a career in engineering, is a privilege, completing my degree wasn’t just a personal achievement—it was a symbol of possibility for other girls in similar situations. But beyond academics, my proudest accomplishment has been using my knowledge to give back.

This success means a lot to me because it reflects both resilience and purpose. It proves that with the right passion and persistence, you can rise above your circumstances and use your journey to light the path for others.”

Isshack Mutalla Mohammed

Local Pathways Fellow 2025

“Getting selected by the UN as the local pathways fellow has deepen my knowledge in the global development and also given me the opportunity to engage in forums that I never dream of looking at where I grew up a typical village.

What makes this my biggest success is not just the idea itself, but the fact that it has inspired hope among other young people in rural areas, showing them that we don’t have to wait for change, we can build it ourselves.

It represents my growth from a survivor of hardship to a problem-solver working for impact. That transformation means everything to me. Thank you.”

The Challenge

The challenge is not a competition, the challenge is not who will succeed first – the challenge is to electrify a continent & create the conditions for economic empowerment.

Africa is the world’s youngest and fastest-growing continent. By 2035, more young Africans will enter the workforce each year than in the rest of the world combined. If well-supported, this rising generation can be the driving force behind Africa’s economic transformation.

But the opportunity is at risk. Most of Africa’s 420 million youth (aged 15–35) face unemployment, informal work, or job insecurity — a missed chance to leverage one of the continent’s greatest assets.

With over half the population lacking access to electricity, investing in energy presents a double win: job creation and the power to fuel Africa’s growth.

“We are excited to reaffirm our partnership with YES! as its foundational partner. Recognizing that young entrepreneurs often grapple with disproportionate barriers, including limited access to educational opportunities, project financing, and quality job prospects, we understand the critical need to empower them with relevant skills and support to seize opportunities in the renewable energy sector. Our shared vision is aligned with the ambitious global goal of generating hundreds of millions of green jobs by 2030. We eagerly anticipate collaborating with EnergyNet and our other partners, both in-person and through the YES! Connect platform, as a pivotal stride towards achieving these objectives.”
